Langtang Valley Trekking – 12 Days Overview

A seven hours bus drive to Dhunche which is 105 Kilometers north east of Kathmandu brings you to the starting point of this spectacular Langtang trek to the splendid Langtang valley region of central Nepal. Moving up a gentle gradient, you pass along the dramatic ridges through villages inhabited by Tibetans, Tamangs and Sherpa people where you will come across the lush forest of Rhododendrons, conifers and oaks.

You will also pass through mountain grazing cattle on the rich alpine pastures under the watchful eyes of their herders. Breathtaking mountain views emerge on your ascent as the vegetation becomes sparser and the conditions more challenging. Once you enter the core Langtang valley from Ghora Tabala you will find fluttering prayer flags in the main trails, brightly painted shortens, Mani walls (carved Tibetan mantra Om Mani Padme Hum) and yak herders welcome you to the land of these high mountain people.
Langtang Lirung, Langshisa, Ganjala Peaks proudly shows above as you head for the main Langtang and Kanjing trail. This adventure takes you off the bitten track into the valley of a hardy untouched people.
You will have ample time to explore and relax in Kathmandu.

EXCEPTIONAL TRIP FOR GOSAIKUNDA – THE SACRED  LAKE n RIVER
There are a Shamanism and a Full moon Festival at 4312 meters in this region, every August.

  • Fully supported camping Trek or tea house trek is available
  • Clean-up campaign for the area
  • Appreciation of culture and viewing Shamanism rituals at Lake Gosainkunda of Langtang region.

Shamans (“Dhami”) come from all over Nepal and arrive at the lake on full moon night which involves dancing and singing. This day is considered holy by the shamans whereby apprentices or “Jhankris” graduate into full shamans.
The full moon month of Shrawan (July – August), the day when this festival is observed is considered sacred all over Nepal and is celebrated in different manners by various groups of people. Throughout the Kingdom, the “Dagadhari” (or those who wear the “Janai” or sacred thread on their bodies) change the “Janai” after having a haircut and a ritual bath on the occasion of Janai Purnima, also known as “Rishi Tarpani”. This festival is observed by the Hindus, especially of the Shaiva sect.
Full moon night in the month of August is also popularly known as “Gunhu Punhi” in the Newar community.
According to time-honored tradition, people receive the “Rakshya Bandhan” thread tied around the wrist. The yellow thread is purified by the chanting of Mantras by Brahmins as a symbol of protection from fear and disease. They also observe the occasion as “Kwati Purnima”.
On this day, thousands of devotees worship Lord Shiva at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu and at Kumbheswor in Lalitpur and take holy bath dips in the ponds and lakes.

In April this year our party of four completed went on a nine day trip to the Langtang Valley in Nepal. I had been trekking twice previously with two different trekking companies. Both had been excellent so I contacted both to make arrangements for the Langtang trek. I chose Earthbound Expeditions because of the prompt and efficient way all my queries were answered by Rajan. Three of our group had not been trekking before and we were very well looked after by our guide Ratna and wonderful porters Manu and Tibok. The only slight negative comment I could make was that hotel accommodation for the last night in Dunche had not been booked. Usually there is no problem getting accommodation but there was a volleyball tournament and environmental conference happening at that time. We did eventually get beds for the night in a guesthouse. I would definitely use Earthbound Expeditions for any future treks
