Ghorepani Poon hill Trek – 08 Days Overview

Poon hill trek in Nepal: Walking holidays in the Nepal Himalaya….
Want to do safe trekking in Nepal? Yes, but don’t want to do a long one? Okay, here is the most suitable trekking in Nepal for you – Ghorepani Poon hill trek in the famous Annapurna region. The most picturesque short trek in Nepal, this trek offers you unreal mountain scenery that will leave you breathless.

Here is how Nikki explains her enjoyment of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with Yoga at her article “Inspired to take a peak” in the Stuff newspaper

…the trek is oddly comfortable. There are rest stops all along the path and water taps are everywhere. The scenery is growing evermore gob-smacking, but I’m falling in love with the Nepali people. Almost everyone we see greets us with a smile and “namaste”. At the top of the steps, we stop for lunch: platters of fried rice, dumplings and noodles. Three sorts of fried carbs! Delicious. Next, we enter a cloud forest, a magical place of mossy trees and running brooks. It’s a relief to be out of the sun, but …

You will hike 2 days to Ghorepani (which used to be a rest stop where ancient traders found water (pani in Nepali) for their horses (ghoda in Nepali).  You will experience sunrise at Poon Hill, with breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks of the Annapurna Sanctuary, including Gangapurna, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli.  Along the trail you will hike through bamboo and rhododendron forest  – it will be in full bloom in the spring – if you trek the Himalaya in March-April.

Enjoy the energizing fresh mountain air while you are totally enthralled with the breathtaking view of the dramatic Annapurna and Fishtail range. Hiking in the serene mountains is truly a blessing and it is made even better with the presence of the Himalaya. The sense of joy that comes to you while you see the snow capped mountains is indescribable; you just feel it and enjoy it.

200 km west of Kathmandu is the unbelievably beautiful city of Pokhara, a six hours bus ride or twenty-five minutes flight from Kathmandu, it is the main-gate way to the Ghorepani Poon hill trek. From Pokhara, there is another one and half hour drive to Nayapul where your trek of the lifetime starts. As you walk the rugged trails, you will enjoy the beauty of nature as you cross small beautiful mountain streams, green hills that overlook the white Himalayan peaks and eventually watch the sunrise over the Annapurna mountain range.

This trek goes from Nayapul to Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani, Poon Hill, then to Tadapani and Ghandruk or Jhinu then back to Nayapul where we drive back to Pokhara.  This short but spectacular trek will make you fall in love with the Nepal Himalayan Mountains, and make you want to see more.

Sightseeing tour

After a delicious breakfast, we head for sightseeing in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley. They are:

• Swoyambhunath: A journey up to this monumental stupa with glittering golden spires provides the travelers with a picturesque view of the Kathmandu Valley and it is a must visit for those who wish to dive in the knowledge of Buddhism. The word Swoyambhunath means self-existent one and history dictates that it was made in the 13th century. At Swoyambhu, immerse yourself in the devotion of God by spinning the prayer wheels, with a backdrop of religious prayer ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ and the beautiful fragrance of incense.

• Boudhanath: The Boudhanath Stupa takes its place among the largest stupas in South Asia. The gigantic white mound spreads 36 meters, and on top of it, there\'s a square tower consisting of the holy Buddha eyes facing all four directions. Prayer flags tied to the stupa flutter in the wind carrying the hopes of people to heaven. As Tibetans inhabited the area in the 1950s, you can see the remains of Tibetan culture to this day too and enquire with them to get in-depth knowledge about their culture. Turn the prayer wheels and circle the stupa as you say your prayers amidst the crowd and pleasant yet strong fragrance of incense.

• Pashupatinath: One of the most revered Hindu pilgrimages in the world is ‘Pashupatinath.’ A small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built here in 879 AD, but the temple stood in its current format 1697 AD when King Bhupatindra Malla made it. This temple is an example of architectural magnificence as the gold-plated roof, silver roofs and woodcarvings of the highest caliber soothe and simultaneously amaze you. The temple comprises of Linga images of Lord Shiva along with numerous statues and shrines. A walk in this temple shows you the true meaning of life as in the yards you’ll see young boys doing ‘Bratabandha’ which starts their journey to adulthood and on the other hand you’ll witness the deceased being cremated in the banks of the holy river Bagmati, indicating that life is short. Talk with the sages residing there and expand your knowledge on Hinduism.

Many people consider the trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani to be the most challenging part of the trek. After a pleasant breakfast, you start the trek, and within the first 5 minutes, you\'ll see a vast suspension bridge and a sign that states the time required to reach Ghorepani. The trail is mostly dominated by horses and en route; you\'ll see the picturesque scenery of mountains and settlements. You\'ll cross the village of Ulleri, and you\'ll gradually leave the corn fields and enter green forests full of rhododendron. The red beauty with a backdrop of the snow-capped mountains like Macchapuchre, Hiunchuli and Annapurna South will never let your fatigue take over you.
