Annapurna Base Camp Trek Overview

A MARVELOUS TREKKING IN NEPAL

WALKING HOLIDAY to ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP of NEPAL
Annapurna Base Camp trek of Nepal is also known as Annapurna Sanctuary trek or ABC trekking. To reach to the base camp of Annapurna the hiking path goes through a hidden alpine amphitheater overshadowed by surrounding ice bound giants including Annapurna One peak over 8,000 meters (26,000 ft), thirteen peaks over 7,000 meters (23,000 ft), & sixteen more over 6,000 meters (20,000 ft).

Lonely planet recommended Annapurna base camp trek as the best place to travel in October 2015 although there was an earthquake in Nepal. …most of Nepal was untouched by the disaster, including the most popular trekking areas like Annapurna. It further says … the classic trekking routes such as the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary Trek climb breathlessly into the Himalaya, offering the kind of views normally reserved for mountaineers. In the process, you’ll be performing a valuable social service, helping Nepal to rebuild after the disaster by investing directly in the local economy….

The gateway to ABC trek is the Lake City of Pokhara. A 1.5-hour drive from Pokhara takes us through lush subtropical forests and traditional farming villages offering a Himalayan panorama with Annapurna in the south, Fishtail and Himchuli soaring above to the trek starting point at Nayapul. Trekking the narrow Modi Khola valley brings you to the base of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and into the Annapurna sanctuary. Here you will spend two remarkable days gazing with breathtaking 360-degree views of the snow-covered peaks above you and the beauty of the landscapes around you, that make up the Annapurna Sanctuary.

The Annapurna Sanctuary is a high glacial basin surrounded by eleven of Nepal’s major peaks and is accessed by a deep gorge that carves through this mountain fortress. It is referred to as the Annapurna “Sanctuary” because of the divine presence of the Hindu goddesses – Annapurna (Hindu Goddess for nourishment) and Gangapurna (Hindu Goddess of Ganges River Water).

Following some part of a traditional route of the Tibetan traders we will trek for 5 to 7 hours daily, passing through terraced fields and bamboo forests, remote villages and into the ice-bound heart of the vast mountainous amphitheater of the Annapurna Base Camp. In total, Annapurna Base Camp Trekking offers adventurers a great opportunity to explore the mountains and enjoy their magic.

Tikhedhunga - Ghorepani

After a mouth watering mountain breakfast at the tea house we start the trek of the day. Probably the most difficult day of the trek in the sense that the trail continues to higher elevations. The first part of the trek is a steep upward walking for about 2 Hrs and then a gradual upward walk. The walk on the stone paved steps is a daring adventure early in the morning. The whole trail leads you through villages and forest to Ghorepani. All the efforts you put out through the day will be rewarded when you reach Ghorepani, with magnificent close up views of the Himalaya (given the weather is clear). We will stay the night at a Guest House at 2850 meters.

Having trekked with Earthbound 2 years ago, for a really life changing, expedition to the Everest Base Camp - I was keen to return. Last year I set about negotiating a return trip with some of the friends I had made on my previous trip, and with Rajan, Earthbound's president. Last month (Nov) 8 of us returned to Nepal for the Annapurna Base Camp trek. It was amazing! I dealt with Rajan directly, by email, and we were able to easily arrange an itinerary for the trek. Having trekked with Earthbound before I was entirely confident that everything would be organised to a high standard. Rajan, and his team, delivered a perfect trek, for a really excellent price, with no hidden extra costs. I specifically requested Resham to be our tour guide, and this was honoured, to our delight. Resham is extremely knowledgeable, with boundless enthusiasm and instills great confidence in the groups he guides. Nepali people are very hospitable and Rajan runs a tight ship, where tourist/customer satisfaction is priority. This filters down to the staff in the Thamel Eco Resort, the tour/trek guides and the porters. The 4 porters ('supporters' Resham prefers to call them) on this trek, were really great young men. They carried our heavy bags, served us drinks/food in the tea houses and even though they must've been exhausted they were always courteous and accommodating. It was a pleasure to spend time with them. If you're reading this trying to decide which trek to do then I'd say they are both tremendous. Others in the group prefer the stunning scenery and greenery of the ABC terrain but I think EBC has the edge for me. It's tougher physically than ABC but walking at altitude, with snow capped mountains as your daily view, creates an enormous sense of achievement. I'm thinking ahead to my next Nepali trek and I know I can't go wrong booking with Earthbound. Thank you Rajan, Resham, Sunil, Santosh, Rajess, Anil and Davindra. Namaste Visited November 2016
